Welcome to this week's newsletter.
The post office have launched a consultation on plans for a new Drop and Collect service on Edleston Road. Have your say here: https://www.postofficeviews.co.uk/national-consultation-team/edleston-road-drop-collect-cw2-7ez-684351/
I would also like to hear your views on this as it is a reduced service compared to the old post office branch, so please do drop me an email to kieran.mullan.mp@parliament.uk.
The Government announced that XL bully dogs will be banned by the end of the year. I welcome this plan. They are dogs that are bred to be aggressive and dangerous and they present an unnecessary danger to the public.
Tuesday was Back British Farming Day. I recently supported a cross party campaign to encourage supermarkets to add a 'Buy British' button on their websites to allow people to buy homegrown food. I am very pleased to hear that the Government has announced it will be support this campaign too.
The Police and Crime Commissioner has launched the latest round of the Community Action Fund. If you are a local group you could be eligible for grants up to £5,000 - so read on below if you want to find out more.
The Government have been preparing for the winter pressures that will affect the NHS over the next few months. After meeting with clinical leaders they announced £200 Million this week to help ensure people get the care they need.
It is positive news that 4 million more people are in work than in 2010. Having a job is also the best way in which people can help themselves get on in life and ease the cost of living pressures that we are all currently facing.
Finally, my interesting fact this week is about the history of salt in Nantwich. Read on below to find out more!
Have a great weekend.

Crewe Post Office Consultation
As you may know, the Post Office have been looking at alternative options to provide services in Crewe since the closure of the office at WHSmith.
They have brought forward plans to create a new Drop & Collect service at the Bargain Buster Shop on Edleston Road where residents can collect and return pre-paid parcels. This will also provide some other services including bill payments and mobile top up.
They are launching a consultation on these proposals (link in the comments below) but I want to know what residents think as well. Did you used to use the old post office for other services? What are your views on the location? Will it make a big impact on you if we just have the reduced services? Do email me (kieran.mullan.mp@parliament.uk).
The Post Office's consultations ends 13th Oct.

XL Bully Dogs To Be Banned
The XL Bully is a large dog breed that has recently been responsible for a number of attacks on adults, children, and other animals – some of which have been fatal.
The Government have therefore announced that the breed will be banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act and new legislation will be brought forward by the end of the year to ensure that the public is kept safe.
These dogs were bred to fight, and no matter how compliant an individual dog might act, that is in their breeding. We have seen examples of even what seems like responsible owners falling victim to their own animals.
But more importantly, that risk is combined with an incredibly powerful animal capable of doing enormous damage. They can weigh more than nine stone and are strong enough to overpower an adult. I think it is right that the Government has decided to act. Of course, how owners treat their dog is important, but that will be little comfort to someone who suffers as a result.
Flu and Covid Winter Jabs
The NHS Winter Vaccine Programme is now underway. Residents in care homes and those housebound will now be getting their Flu and Covid Vaccines this week and other eligible groups will be invited from Monday.
You will be able to book through the NHS website, NHS app or by ringing 119.

Back British Farming Day
Tuesday was Back British Farming Day where we encourage people to back our farmers who do fantastic work keeping our nation fed.
I recently supported a cross party campaign to encourage supermarkets to add a 'Buy British' button on their websites to allow people to buy homegrown food. I am very pleased to hear that the Government has announced it will be support this campaign too.
Supporting our local farmers will help them invest in their businesses and carry on putting food on our table.
Community Action Fund
The latest round of the Community Action Fund has opened.
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer, has made grants of up to £5,000 available for new projects or initiatives which will deliver community safety or crime prevention activities through the Community Acton Fund.
Applications are welcomed from community, voluntary or third sector organisations including Parish Councils.
The deadline is 30th November. Find out more details here: https://www.cheshire-pcc.gov.uk/what-the-commissioner-does/community-funding/community-action-fund/
NHS Winter Funding
Winter is the busiest time for the NHS, with increased pressure from seasonal illnesses such as flu. As such, it is right that the Government prepares for this and ensures our health service is fully prepared.
The Government have met with clinical leaders to drive forward this planning and have announced £200 Million to help ensure people get the care they need over this winter.
This builds upon record levels of funding we are providing for the NHS and social care.
4 Million More People in Work Since 2010
New job figures released this week show that almost 4 million more people are now in work compared to 2010, including 1.1 million more since before the pandemic.
Like most parts of the world, we are facing economic pressures - but thanks to this strong workforce our economy is resilient helping us make progress on our aim to half inflation.
Having a job is also the best way in which people can help themselves get on in life and ease the cost of living pressures that we are all currently facing.
Nantwich Salt
The salt industry of a bygone era is quite literally responsible for how Nantwich got its name. Now, whilst the border of Wales is a fair distance from Nantwich today, in the past this border was in flux. With language being intermixed and terms borrowed between Anglo-Saxons, Celtic speakers and Danes and influenced earlier by the Romans with Latin, and later the Normans with French, the English language is a unique blend including many other languages around the world.
Derived from “Nant yr Heledd Wen” meaning “stream of the white salt pit”, Nantwich’s origins can be traced to the Celtic Welsh language. With the Brine Springs in the River Weaver first utilised by the Romans to produce salt during the later years of during their occupation in England, the area would go onto produce salt for a further 1600 years. This industry was central to ensuring the preservation of perishable foods in a time where refrigeration was not a real option. At a high of around 200 salt houses by 1600, it would take only 256 years before all had closed in 1856. Given the critical nature of salt in this prior era, it comes as no surprise that the memory of this now defunct industry lives on through the name of Nantwich town.
Though we still get to enjoy our unique outdoor Brine Pool in Nantwich which is incredibly popular!
