Transport Minister Visits Crewe
Huw Merriman, Minister of State for Transport, has visited Crewe as part of a summer tour of the UK’s railways.
We began the day with a tour around Crewe station, exploring how the Government can work together with Cheshire East to ensure the investment from HS2 can deliver improvements to the station.
HS2 is already securing jobs-Alstom at Crewe Works won the contract to make the bogies for the trains.
Later on, I took the Minister around Crewe town centre, discussing how HS2 and other rail developments can help boost local regeneration – bringing more jobs and opportunities for residents.
We all know the big challenges in the town centre. I campaigned hard for a Crewe Town Deal which is going to pay for a new Youth Club, pocket park upgrades, regeneration of Flag Lane Baths and more. Find out more here:

We finished off the day with a visit to the Locomotive Services Group, a local business that works on refurbishing steam engines and locomotives. They also got to meet those working onboard the Pullman - providing a first-class service.
The railways are the lifeblood of our area. The rail industry not only forms a huge part of our past and heritage – but will play a pivotal role in our future.
The opportunities that HS2 will bring are invaluable to the regeneration of the town and are already creating jobs for local people.
It was also good to see just how large a role Crewe plays in maintaining the UK’s rail heritage – keeping history alive through refurbishing old trains at the Locomotive Services Group.
Did You Know? Wybunbury and the Domesday Book
There is certainly a long history to the isles which make up the United Kingdom today. However, one of the most significant early developments in English history, which acted as a vital foundation for society as we know it today was the Domesday Book, otherwise known as the Great Survey.
When William the Conqueror succeeded in establishing himself as the King of England, he wanted an exact inventory of what he now owned as an absolute monarch. In 1085 the king sent his agents to survey every shire in England, to list his holdings and dues owed to him.
Indeed, Wybunbury was one of these settlements included in Domesday Book, in the hundred of Warmundestrou and the county of Cheshire. It had a recorded population of 5 households in 1086, putting it in the smallest 20% of settlements recorded in Domesday.
The manuscript is still held today at The National Archives in Kew and remains a significant primary source for historians. No survey came close to attempting the scope and scale of the Domesday book until 1873’s Return of Owners of Land, supporting how remarkable an achievement it was nearly 1000 years ago.

Photograph of the Year
Voting for the IMAGO Photograph of the Year is now open.
One of the entries shortlisted is the last picture of Queen Elizabeth - taken just a few days before she died last year. It was a testament to her dedicated service to this country that she was still working up until the last few days of her life. It would be a fantastic tribute to her life and service for this photo to win!
