Welcome to this week's newsletter.
At midnight tonight, the Energy Price Guarantee will come into effect. This will help families with the increasing cost of energy by capping the unit price. This doesn't cap your bill, it caps what you pay per unit of energy. So a typical household on typical usage will pay on average £2,500 per year, saving around £1,000 and potentially a lot more if bills hit £6,000 next year as some are predicting. This is on top of the £400 Energy Bills Discount that all households are receiving. Similar support for energy bills is also available for businesses, who are also struggling. The package of support being provided is one of the biggest in the world and that got a bit lost this week I think.
I also know people are concerned about their mortgages after interest rates went up and we saw uncertainty from markets at the start of the week in terms of the budget. Most people I know expected mortgage rates to go up to some extent. But I am clear the government needs to recognise the difficulties this can cause people. I think the government could have done a better job at putting forward its plans in a way that gave people and markets more confidence about the bigger picture. Focusing relentless on growing the economy is the right plan-a major recession would have a huge impact on less well off people. But things are very uncertain at the moment and adding to uncertainty in any way isn't going to help. It is good to see things starting to settle and I hope that continues and I am feeding back very strongly to government on behalf of my affected constituents.
Tax cuts for higher earners are never exactly popular. It can seem difficult to justify especially when people are struggling and it would not have been my priority. But the argument is that lowering rates can encourage people to live and pay tax here and to not try and avoid paying taxes so overall you get more money for public services. There is evidence from the past that this works. We have countries like Ireland just next door with lower tax rates that we are competing with.
So I think its reasonable to see how this plans pans out and the government needs to come forward as soon as possible with their full plans for growing the economy and encourage investors and high earners to come here. But I understand how concerned people are.
You may remember the tragic murder of my colleague, David Amess MP, last year. Every year, he would organise a tea party for people 100 years old or older in his constituency. To honour his memory, I have campaigned for an event like this to become part of UK Parliament Week, and the first will be this year. I will be hosting one locally in November, so if you know of anyone 100 years and above who I should invite, please let me know!
At the weekend, I went along to the Cheshire Police Passing Out Ceremony (their version of a graduation) for the new recruits. It was great to speak to so many enthusiastic people who want to make a difference.
I also recently went to Alstom to break the ground on a new rail maintenance facility. Crewe has a bright rail future, and this is just one way in which rail investment is returning to Crewe, providing jobs and opportunities for local people.
I am very proud of the Crewe Clean Team for making it to the final of the BBC Make a Difference Awards. They are an amazing team who do a lot of good work in our area, so it was really good to be there to support them!
Finally, at the weekend I went along to an event hosted by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust where we planted the wildflower meadow in Queens Park. A fun event for the kids and great for the environment!
Have a great weekend.

Centenarian Tea Party
You will remember the tragic death of my colleague, David Amess MP, last year.
While an MP, David Amess held ‘Centenarian Tea Parties’ annually in his Southend West Constituency.
Since his death, I have campaigned to make this event a part of UK Parliament Week, as a way for all MPs to honour David’s memory. UK Parliament Week is an annual event which aims to promote the work of Parliament and get people involved with our democracy.
Following my campaign, the annual tea party is now one of the activities that people will be taking part in across the country.
I am now calling for anyone who knows someone who is 100 years old or older, who would like to come along to my event in Crewe and Nantwich, to come forward so that they can be invited.
David was a incredibly hard-working MP who stood up for his Southend constituents over many, many years. The Centenarian Tea Parties are just part of his legacy, and I wanted to see them carried on, not just in Southend, but around the country.
This will be an amazing event which will not only honour the memory of my late colleague, but also provide a great opportunity to bring older people in the community together to share stories and make friendships
Please do get in touch if you are, or know someone, 100 years old or older who would like to join us.
For more information on invitations, residents can get in touch by emailing kieran.mullan.mp@parliament.uk or calling 01270 583 432.
Police Passing Out
it was good to meet just some of the new recruits to Cheshire Police at the weekend with the Chief Constable.
They took part in a passing out ceremony (like a graduation ceremony for police) with their friends and family watching! I remember my dad watching at mine!
Was great to hear about their enthusiasm to make a difference to people and stand up and be counted. We should never take for granted the people who are willing to run towards criminals and danger when most people want to run away.
Alstom Wall Removal
I was recently invited by rail company Alstom to break ground on a new train maintenance facility.
From March 2023, the maintenance of the Bogies and Traction Motors of the Class 390 Pendolinos, ran by Avanti West Coast on the West Coast Mainline, will be carried out in Crewe. This has traditionally been done at Longsight and Widnes.
I joined Services UK Managing Director, Peter Broadley and Project Director Parts, Overhaul & Modernisation, Steve Hadfield, for a ceremonial ‘ground breaking’ where we part demolished a wall, which will pave the way for the relocati
Crewe has a rich rail heritage and history, but also a bright rail future. The moving of the maintenance facility for the Pendolinos is just one of the ways in which the rail industry is looking towards Crewe.
We also have HS2, and all the benefits that this investment will bring. The old Crewe Works site will also be making the bogies for the new HS2 trains.
Our campaign for Crewe to become the home of Great British Railways is also in its final stages, with an announcement of the winner expected soon.
Make a Difference Awards
Well done to Crewe Clean Team for making it to the final for the Environment Award at BBC Radio Stoke Make A Difference Awards last week! It was great to be able to go along and support them!
Cheshire Wildlife Trust
This week I met up with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust who were down in Queens Park for an event where you could make your own seed bomb and help plant the wildflower meadow!
Not only a fun activity for kids but a great way to help improve our local environment!
