In a great twist the Mayor of Crewe, Virginia USA, has written to the Secretary of State for Transport declaring the US town’s support for our bid. Their town was founded in 1888 and is also an historic railway town. It was named after and in honour of our town.
Their town council has also issued a resolution of support for the bid, recognising the important role that the rail industry has to play in both communities.
Simon Yates, from Crewe Town Board, recently visited Crewe and reached out to the namesake town for support. While on the trip, former Mayor of Crewe Diana Yates exchanged gifts between the two Mayor’s to celebrate the links between the two rail towns. Great job Simon!
As part of the campaign, a short film has been produced to showcase Crewe’s rail heritage and its current strong connection to the rail industry, which is one of the main reasons why we have such a good case. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkatpHBi_-M&ab_channel=CheshireEast
Locally we can be glad that finally after more than a year of campaigning with residents and local councillors Peter Groves and Andrew Martin work has started on a new crossing on Peter Destapleigh Way. I know there are lots of concerns about road safety locally and I can't get a win on all of them, but this place worried me more than any other so I am delighted we got crossing in the end.
Nantwich Town Disability Football are a club in Nantwich specifically for people of all ages and disabilities to play football in a safe space. They are putting on a showcase tournament at the Nantwich Town FC 3G pitches this Saturday 13th August at 12:30pm and would love for everyone to come down and support the teams. Next weekend Wistaston Community Council are hosting their 39th Flower & Produce Show at the Church Hall in Wistaston.
If you enjoy my newsletter always feel free to forward to friends and family and encourage them to sign up (https://www.drkieranmullan.org.uk/join-my-mailing-list). SHERBORNE ESTATE MEETING
Over the Jubilee weekend I visited the Sherborne Estate community centre in Crewe and when I was there residents talked to me about concerns about anti-social behaviour and drug dealing on the estate. They had been raising these concerns for some time and didn’t seem to be getting anywhere.
I asked Chief Inspector Fez Khan and Police & Crime Commissioner John Dwyer to attend a meeting with residents to try and start tackling these issues. There are no quick fixes, but we have agreed a plan of action and I will be asking Cheshire East and others to come along and play their part as well.
Hopefully, we can secure an improvement in coming months.
Peter Destapleigh Way crossing begins
Work has finally begun on a new crossing in Nantwich after months of campaigning by local councillors, residents and I.
Concerns were raised about the lack of a crossing on Peter Destapleigh Way at the exit from the Stapeley Water Gardens estate. The road is a 40mph road with the exit largely concealed by hedging meaning neither drivers or pedestrians have advanced site of each other.
Nantwich South Cllrs Peter Groves and Andrew Martin and I have been lobbying Cheshire East to act for more than a year, raising directly with the Council Leader Sam Corcoran. After securing agreement in principle for the crossing months ago, we were frustrated by the wait for the work to begin.
Visiting the site in the morning earlier this year we saw how traffic stopped and started irregularly while school children were crossing. We later videoed this to show Cheshire East the dangerous reality of the situation and the need for urgent action.
Work on the crossing has now commenced, to the relief of residents on the estate.
I know Peter and Andrew are as happy as I am about this. I know across the whole area there is more we need to do on road safety and speeding but this crossing worried me more than any other so I am very happy we have got a result. It has taken Peter, Andrew and I months and months of not letting this drop. I want to thank the residents that helped. I know a crossing here might be difficult for drivers with others so nearby, but children’s safety has to come first and this was an accident waiting to happen.
Women's Institute talk
I was pleased to be invited to speak with the Haslington Women’s Institute earlier this week. I talked about my journey in politics up to now, the life of, and why I became an MP as well as discussing my priorities for Crewe and Nantwich. Afterwards, I took lots of questions from a very engaging room! I was given the tough job of judging the favourite summer flowers competition as well!
GIST visit
I met with Gist earlier this year at the celebration of the cold chain suppliers event in Parliament. This week I went to visit Gist at their Crewe site. Gist pride themselves in transforming supply chains, with an environmental benefit too! Gist employs around 6,100 people in total, with the site in Crewe employing around 480 people. The Crewe site is open 24/7 where they manage the chilled food warehousing and transport for Marks & Spencer. It was great to see another thriving business in Crewe.
Commonwealth Games
What a fantastic fortnight of sport it’s been! This year’s commonwealth games were hosted in Birmingham, and they really did put on a show.
With 176 medals won at the games, Team England exceeded expectations, winning more medals than ever before at the games. Congratulations to every medallist!
Thank you to all the athletes, spectators, organisers, and volunteers that made these Commonwealth Games so brilliant.
Private Member's Bill
This week in the office, we have had a work experience pupil in – Henry. Henry has done some research and written the below piece as part of our Private Member’s Bill series:
Cultural Objects (Protection from Seizure) Act 2022 One of the most recent private members bills to be passed was the Cultural Objects (Protection from Seizure) Act 2022 put forward by conservative MP Mel Stride. This bill allows art galleries and museums to apply for extended periods of protection for objects on loan from seizure from foreign courts. Given that the ownership of art can be contested, many countries will not lend art to the UK without this protection. This bill will allow museums and galleries to display more exhibitions and receive more objects from abroad to display for longer.
Wistaston Flower and Produce Show
On Saturday 20th August 2022, Wistaston Community Council are hosting their 39th Flower & Produce Show at the Church Hall in Wistaston. This will be a great day for everyone to attend! Thanks to Cllr Margaret Simon for the heads up.
