On my first day of work experience arriving at the constituency office, I was excited but a little apprehensive. There was no need as Frances was extremely welcoming and put me at ease immediately. Interns Lily and Josh were both really friendly and finding out about their routes to working here was very interesting. From the outset I was given various tasks to complete, and it was great to feel like I was making a contribution whilst also learning about local issues and what is required of the constituency office.
My time at Westminster was amazing and once again Kieran and his team, Alex and Juan, were so incredibly welcoming and generous with their time. I was given a tour of Westminster by Alex and shown all the intricate details and pieces of history that have been preserved in the building, which was fascinating. Whilst I was there, I’d hoped to spot some key political figures and I was lucky enough to see Jeremy Corbyn and Priti Patel within 10 minutes of each other! Much like in the constituency office I was given certain tasks to achieve, one of which was a briefing for a meeting with The Climate Coalition, which I was fortunate enough to attend. I was also present at a meeting on Geo-Thermal Energy with Kieran and learnt about the current projects underway and the potential that geo-thermal energy has in the UK. It was an instructive insight into how MP’s parliamentary offices function and all the work that is done behind the scenes.
Back at the constituency we attended a meeting about upcoming roadworks, and having lived in Battle for 17 years, to meet the mayor at this meeting was an absolute bonus. During the meeting I was tasked with taking notes and later wrote up a summary of the discussion and the conclusion that was reached. All in all, it was a busy week filled with lots of exciting opportunities that solidified my ambition to work in Parliament. I can’t wait to go back, and I can’t thank Kieran and his team enough for making my experience so wonderful!
