Dr Kieran Mullan MP has used a Westminster Hall debate to draw attention to the particular pressures faced by coastal communities, noting that towns such as Bexhill experience higher levels of economic inactivity, limited job availability and increasing social isolation.
He outlined how these challenges often overlap - ranging from poor health and disability to unemployment, housing insecurity and a lack of local opportunity, and stressed that these factors can leave people feeling disconnected from their community.
Despite this, Dr Mullan emphasised the strong network of organisations in Sidley and Bexhill that are working together to improve wellbeing and create new opportunities. He highlighted the role of the Sidley Community Hub, developed through the previous Government’s Levelling Up Fund in partnership with Rother District Council and the De La Warr Pavilion, as an example of how long-term community leadership can shape local regeneration.
He also recognised the contributions of groups including The Pelham, which provides youth work, counselling and volunteering opportunities; Bexhill Family Collective CIC, which supports families through early years education, food provision and community activities; Sidley Family Hub, offering accessible support for families at all stages; Bexhill Caring Community, which assists older and housebound residents; and Freedom Church Sidley, whose Marketplace food larder and community café help reduce food insecurity and isolation.
Dr Mullan said: “Looking ahead in Bexhill we will be focused on our £20 million Bexhill Town Deal, awarded by the previous government. We have been delayed by this government by a year, but work is progressing and I am ambitious for what we can achieve and the projects we can deliver which I know residents will be excited about. I know there are many charities and community groups and of course residents willing success for Bexhill and we can achieve it. Whatever the obstacles - we will overcome.”
