kmDr Kieran Mullan MP recently visited St Mary Magdalene Catholic Primary School in Bexhill to congratulate nine year old Joey Steele, the winner of his constituency-wide Creative Writing Competition.

The competition, which was launched earlier this year, invited primary school pupils from across Bexhill and Battle to submit original pieces of creative writing. Dr Mullan said he was delighted by the high standard of entries received, making the judging process a difficult one.

Joey's winning story, ‘The Silence’, stood out for its thoughtful reflections on nature and wildlife, and its reminder to appreciate the sounds and moments that often go unnoticed in the rush of everyday life.

During his visit to St Mary Magdalene school, Dr Mullan met with Joey and his classmates, presented Joey with a certificate recognising his achievement, and toured the school with pupils and staff. He also met with the School Council to hear directly from students about their experiences and priorities.

As part of the visit, Joey recorded a reading of his winning story, allowing others across the constituency to enjoy his work.

Dr Kieran Mullan MP said:

"I was incredibly impressed by the quality of entries submitted to this year's competition, but Joey's story really stood out. ‘The Silence’ is a thoughtful and imaginative piece of writing that encourages us all to take a moment to appreciate the world around us.

"It was a pleasure to visit St Mary Magdalene Catholic Primary School, present Joey with his prize in person, and meet so many enthusiastic pupils. I would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition and the school for making me so welcome."

Dr Mullan also thanked the staff at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Primary School for supporting the competition and encouraging pupils to develop their creativity and writing skills.

The Creative Writing Competition was open to primary school pupils across the Bexhill and Battle constituency and attracted entries from schools throughout the area.
