Last week, Dr Kieran Mullan MP met with Bexhill Old Town Preservation Society (BOTPS) to learn more about their work preserving and celebrating the history behind the Old Town in Bexhill.
BOTPS was initially founded in 1966 by local residents who wanted to protect the Old Town from urban development. They started out as a local pressure group before becoming a registered charity in 1986. BOTPS have been hosting a wide variety of community events including history talks, quiz nights, school tours, a May Day, and more to celebrate their 60th anniversary.
Kieran was taken on a tour around the Old Town by the Chairman of BOTPS, Helen Enock, who explained the history of Bexhill and how its stewardship by the Earls De La Warr developed it into the distinguished seaside town it is today. Helen pointed out to Kieran the various projects undertaken by the charity throughout the walk, including the hanging baskets throughout the Old Town, which BOTPS fund to contribute to the area’s natural beauty.
Speaking after the meeting, Kieran said:
‘It is a privilege to learn more about the rich heritage of Bexhill. My tour around the Old Town reminded me just how proud I am to represent Bexhill, and how lucky we are to be surrounded by areas with such a rich and detailed history’.
Chairman of BOTPS, Helen, stated:
‘We were delighted to welcome Dr Mullan to Bexhill Old Town and show just what a jewel in the crown of this beautiful area of Sussex it is. We were encouraged by his support and enthusiasm for this unique location crammed with history, heritage and cherished green spaces’.
