Residents are being invited to discover new opportunities, hear from inspiring speakers and celebrate the possibilities of later life at the new Live Well Age Well Fair, coming to the De La Warr Pavilion on Wednesday 30 September from 11am to 3pm.
The free community event being organised by Dr Kieran Mullan, MP for Bexhill and Battle, with the support of Rother Voluntary Action, Rother District Council and the De La Warr Pavilion will bring together local organisations, community groups and expert speakers for a day focused on helping people make the most of the years ahead.
Kieran said “Whether you're approaching retirement, enjoying more free time, looking for new hobbies, planning your next adventure or simply curious about what's happening locally, the fair will showcase a wide range of activities, experiences and opportunities available across the area.”
Visitors can explore everything from travel and leisure opportunities to volunteering, adult learning, cultural activities and community groups, alongside practical advice and information to help people stay healthy, active and independent.
The event will feature two special guest speakers. Dr Xand van Tulleken, the well-known doctor and broadcaster from the BBC's BAFTA-winning Operation Ouch!, will share insights into healthy living and wellbeing and discuss his new book, Make Me Well, which is being released in September, and Dr Elena Mucci, a Consultant Physician and Geriatrician with a passion for helping people maintain independence, wellbeing and quality of life as they age, and a longstanding commitment to person-centred care that helps people live well for longer.
With more than 50 exhibitors attending, visitors will be able to discover local services, meet community organisations and find out about opportunities they may never have known existed. There will also be workshops, demonstrations, interactive activities and health checks throughout the day.
Organisers hope the event will encourage people to think positively about later life and the many opportunities it can bring.
Rother Age Friendly Network Coordinator, Naomi Robinson said: “In 2021, Rother District Council successfully applied to join the World Health Organisation’s network of Age Friendly Communities, of which there are now over 100 across the UK. With one of the UK’s largest 60+ populations, Rother has an opportunity to be at the forefront of a worldwide Age-Friendly movement. This event will showcase many of the local organisations that help make Rother's communities great places to grow older.”
"Growing older offers the chance to learn new skills, meet new people, travel, volunteer, stay active and enjoy new experiences," said Kieran. "The Live Well Age Well Fair is about celebrating those opportunities and helping people make the most of them."
The event is particularly aimed at people aged 55 and over, but families, carers and residents of all ages are welcome to attend.
Admission is free and further details, including the full programme of activities and speakers, will be announced closer to the event.
