Dr Kieran Mullan, MP for Bexhill and Battle, this week met with the Minister for Policing along with Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne to discuss Operation STOP - an innovative Sussex pilot scheme introduced by PCC Bourne to tackle repeat shoplifting and support local high streets.
Operation STOP uses electronic tagging for prolific shoplifting offenders, allowing police to monitor individuals more effectively and intervene earlier to prevent further offences. The initiative aims to reduce repeat crime, improve safety for retailers, and restore confidence among businesses affected by persistent theft.
Early results from the programme’s first six months have been encouraging, showing a reduction in offending among tagged individuals alongside strong partnership working between Sussex Police and local retailers. With funding arrangements and governance structures now in place, plans are underway to expand the scheme across Sussex.
Commenting on her pilot, Katy Bourne said:
"I promised that we would take shop theft seriously in Sussex so I am delighted that we are the first police force in the country to use established tagging technology for prolific shoplifters. If we are going to seriously tackle the scourge of shop theft, deterrents need to be more effective and punishments must be meaningful."
Commenting after the meeting, Dr Kieran Mullan MP said:
“I hear regularly from local businesses about the blight of shoplifting and the impact it has on staff, customers and the future of our high streets. Operation STOP is a practical, targeted approach that focuses on repeat offenders and helps protect local shops.
“The early results are promising and show what can be achieved when police, retailers and local partners work together. I hope the Home Office takes note of the success of this pilot and considers rolling out similar schemes across the country so other communities can benefit.”
