As you know, the President of the United States brokered a 20-point plan to end the war in the Middle East. The initial phase of this peace plan, which came into effect on 10th October 2025, represented a significant breakthrough. However, recent developments have tested its durability. Israeli airstrikes in response to alleged ceasefire violations by Hamas have killed over 100 Palestinians, including women and children. Hamas has denied responsibility for the attacks on Israeli forces and has delayed the handover of hostage remains, citing the destruction in Gaza and accusing Israel of breaching the agreement. Additionally, evidence has been emerging that since the ceasefire Hamas have been brutally executing innocent civilians in Gaza.
Yet again, we are faced with competing claims and no clear way to know the truth of everything, even if supporters of either side of the conflict seem confident that they do.
Despite these troubling setbacks, the US administration maintains that the ceasefire is still in effect, though fragile. I will continue to press the UK Government to step up its efforts, working with allies in the region and the United States to bring an end to the violence and support the eradication of terrorism inside Gaza, which is essential for sustainable governance, peace, and reconstruction.
I want to assure you that I will continue to firmly support a credible and irreversible pathway towards a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, whereby both nations and the wider region can live side-by-side in peace and security.
But this remains a deeply concerning matter that I am giving serious and ongoing consideration to.
